The speed of a quartz dress watch's travel time is determined by the oscillation frequency of the quartz crystal oscillator. Open the back cover of the quartz dress watch, you can see a trimming capacitor and a fixed capacitor connected to the two ends of the quartz crystal. Some quartz dress watches only have a trimming capacitor.
Increasing the capacity of these two capacitors can slow down the travel time of the quartz dress watch and reducing the capacity can speed up its travel time. Trimming capacitors and fixed capacitors have a certain allowable range of capacitance, generally 1040 picofarads, which cannot be exceeded during adjustment. Otherwise, the temperature characteristics and power consumption of the oscillator in the quartz dress watch will change.
Pry open the back cover of the case to find the trimmer capacitor and mark a position. To reduce the influence of the human body, you should use a small screwdriver made of bamboo or plastic to rotate the trimmer capacitor slightly in one direction. After a few hours, check with the standard time of the radio station. If the error becomes smaller, the direction of rotation is correct; if the error becomes larger, you have to rotate in the other direction.
After the rotation direction of the quartz dress watch's fine-tuning capacitor is determined, it can be adjusted. In the beginning, the rotation angle can be slightly larger. If the error is gradually decreased, the rotation angle also should be gradually decreased or it can only be slightly touched. High precision can be achieved through fine and repeated adjustments. The time range that the trimmer capacitor can be adjusted is approximately within 12 seconds.
If the error of the quartz dress watch is too large and exceeds the adjustment range of the fine-tuning capacitor, the fixed capacitor needs to be adjusted at the same time. For those watches with slow travel time, the capacitance M of the fixed capacitor and the fine-tuning capacitor can be gradually reduced until they are removed. Generally, the watch can be set about 20 seconds ahead within 24 hours.
A small capacitor of 5-40 picofarad can also be connected in series in the quartz crystal circuit to speed up the travel time. If the quartz dress watch travels too fast, it is often because the fixed capacitors and trimmer capacitors fall off or fail. Small capacitors of 5-50 picofarad should be repaired and the specific capacitance value should be determined through repeated trials.
