Whatever your watch, you want to keep it working at its best, and that means looking after it. Watch maintenance doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming though, so here are six things we recommend you keep in mind when looking after your watch.
According to the movements the watch holds, there are in total two different types of watches. While one type uses mechanical movements, another, such as our Japan MOVT womens watch series, uses quartz movements. To provide better maintenance for your watch, it is important to know what kind of movements your watches have. While the mechanical movement requires winding to keep it running, the quartz movement uses a battery as a power source, which will need replacing at regular intervals to maintain operation.
Many watches today are described as water-resistant in the sales literature. This means that if they are splashed with water in an accident or other situation, they will be fine. It does not mean that you can submerge the watch in water, and it will continue to work. Even with waterproof watches, beware of issues. The waterproofing is provided by a gasket that seals every join in the watch, and this becomes brittle over time, losing its effectiveness. Ideally, it should be replaced at the time of watch servicing, but if your waterproof watch has not been serviced for a few years, it may not be as waterproof as it used to be.
If you do have a mechanical movement watch, be careful when winding. Stop when you feel resistance in the spring, as overtightening can cause additional stress and break the mechanism completely.
During the day, your watch can be exposed to all kinds of chemicals, salt, acid from sweat and more. If left, these can cause damage to your watch surface over time, losing the sheen of the metal or destroying leather and other materials. Clean the watch regularly to avoid this, wiping with a damp cloth. Avoid leaving the watch in direct sunlight too, as this can fade the watch strap or face.
The most dangerous place you can leave your watch is in a drawer at home. This is especially true for mechanical movement watched, which needs to be wound and used daily to keep the mechanism lubricated and working properly. Long periods without use can result in seizing parts and other issues that will require a professional watch service to remedy.
If you have a quality timepiece with a precision mechanical movement, don't take it to the nearest battery fitter at the mall to service it for you. A specialist watch servicing center will have the tools, skills, and experience to look after your watch safely and deliver great results.
